3-Steps to Objectively Approach Any Goal

achieving goals focus & productivity goal setting personal development strategic planning vision & purpose Feb 07, 2025

Achieving your big, beautiful (or even so big they're scary) goals is absolutely possible when you have a clear, structured plan to follow. We’re talking about alignment—where your vision, tactics, and strategy all work together.

So many people get an idea and jump straight to tactics, skipping vision altogether. They get the tools or the softwares or the people but no one knows why the heck they're doing what they're doing.

Always start in the right place...

Step One: Define the Vision

Everything starts with vision. It's your "why." Why are you doing this? What does success look like at the finish line? Your vision is the heartbeat of your goals and keeps you motivated when things get tough. Without it, you’re like a ship at sea with no compass—drifting wherever the waves take you.

There’s a compelling lesson in history that shows how important vision really is. During the Vietnam War, the U.S. had incredible resources and advanced tactics, but they didn’t have a unifying vision. The Viet Cong, on the other hand, were clear on what they were fighting for, and that clarity helped them outlast a much stronger opponent.

Your vision should inspire, guide, and unite everyone involved. It’s your North Star, keeping you and your team laser-focused on what truly matters.

Here’s How to Define Your Vision:

  • Get super clear on the purpose and desired outcome of your goal.
  • Make sure every person on your team understands and aligns with the vision.
  • Regularly revisit and reinforce it to stay grounded and inspired.

Step Two: Define Tactics

Ah, tactics—the part where people usually want to start. But here’s the truth: if you jump straight into action without a clear vision, you’ll end up spinning your wheels and getting frustrated. Tactics are the "how." They’re the practical, short-term steps you take to make progress.

Think of tactics as tools in your toolbox. You pick the right ones for the job at hand, but you also have to stay flexible because plans change. That’s part of growth! The key is making sure your tactics serve your vision, not the other way around.

Here’s How to Define Tactics:

  • Identify tasks and tools that directly move you closer to your goal.
  • Stay flexible—what works today might need to shift tomorrow.
  • Prioritize tasks based on which ones will have the biggest impact.

Step Three: Develop the Strategy

Now let’s talk about strategy. This is the bridge between your vision and tactics. Your strategy is "the plan." It’s how you’ll use your resources, actions, and time to hit your goals. Without a strategy, it’s easy to get caught up in busywork that looks productive but doesn’t actually get you closer to where you want to be.

A strong strategy keeps everything connected. It lays out your path, key milestones, and how you’ll measure progress along the way.

Here’s How to Develop a Strategy:

  • Create a plan that ties your tactics directly to your vision.
  • Set clear milestones and define how you’ll measure success.
  • Be ready to adjust the plan as you go, but stay true to the vision.

Let’s Bring It All Together

When you align your vision, tactics, and strategy, you become unstoppable. You’ll know exactly why you’re taking each step, which helps you avoid distractions, burnout, and wasted effort.

History has proven that vision is the game-changer. It can inspire people to do extraordinary things, even in the face of adversity. And when you combine that vision with the right strategy and tactics? That’s when the magic happens. ✨

Quote to Reflect On:
